Bago was formerly known as Pegu. It is just 80 km (50 miles) north of Yangon. It is just about an hour drive from Yangon. Bago is accessible easily from Yangon, Mandalay, Pyay and other cities. Bago is one of the richest archaeological sites in Myanmar. Bago was made the capital of the Mon Kingdom and it came to be known as Hansavati (Hanthawaddy). It was also the seaport of ancient Mon kings. Then it became the Second Myanmar Empire founded by King Bayinnaung. Bago lies 80 km ( 50 miles ) north – east of Yangon. It was an ancient capital of Mon Kingdom in 15th century and known as Hanthawaddy Kingdom under the Mon. It is capital city of Bago division. It takes about 1 hour 30 min drive from Yangon to Bago by car on a newly up graded six lane high way and also reach by train. Bago can do day’s trip. The most famous site are Kyakhatwine monastery, Shwe Tha Lyaung Reclining Buddha which has 55m long, Shwemawdaw Pagoda – 28m high huge Buddha image of Kyaikpun, the Mon old Palace site ( Kanbawzathadi Palace ), Hinn Tha Gone Pagoda and Bago market.
